WHAT MAKES TRAINING SUCCESSFUL

Whether simply selecting a book for your staff to read or purchasing a multi-day training seminar, there are keys to consider when choosing the right training resources. These keys will help you implement the changes you want to create… and see the results you need.

  1. Make sure training is the answer. Although an increase in skills and motivation can help employees perform at higher levels, an organization’s true challenge may not be a lack of knowledge or enthusiasm. Slow technology, distribution systems, inventory control, order fulfillment, etc., may be the culprits contributing to a decrease in productivity, sales or morale. Eliminate those areas first before looking into training.
  2. Be in alignment with goals and strategic objectives. What new channels or partnerships is your organization developing in the next 2-3 years? What skills and productivity levels are required of your team to meet this years revenue goals? What is my plan for meeting threats from the competition? The answers to these questions will help you determine if you need training in the areas of: leadership, teamwork, change management, sales, etc.
  3. Create an implementation plan. The real work begins when class is over. Celebrate what you have learned and create some milestones for your team to reach in the coming months. Research shows that most people forget 80% of what they learn within 5 days of a training session. This can be avoided with a simple set follow-up steps. What will you or your management team do to make sure 80% of your training investment is not lost?
  4. Measure your results. Productivity milestones, new habits, sales results, etc. can all be a part of the results and outcomes you can expect as a part of your training solution. Your implementation plan will help you realize specific results (key #3). But determine your desired outcomes, success indicators and measurements before selecting a training program.
